Chess for the winter months
The story that the present club recognizes as its predecessor begins in the early 1980s, when a group of people met alternately in Castell d’Aro and Platja d’Aro. Chess belonged to a wider effort to fer poble, creating year-round community life that did not depend entirely on the tourist season.
Within that setting, Màrius Lleget places a proposal for chess classes at the Vall d’Aro public school in the winter of 1983. After three school years of teaching, his account dates the launch of Club d’Escacs l’Avenir Fanalenc to 1987.
The Avenir Fanalenc model
At the Casino, Avenir Fanalenc brought together two complementary dimensions: adult club activity and a space for youth teaching and tournaments.
As the first team grew stronger, the leadership discussed how to compete at a higher level without abandoning the project’s educational and social purpose. Its plans paired a more structured chess school with development teams and local events, rather than measuring progress only by the first team’s division.
The present Club d’Escacs Platja d’Aro calls the now defunct Avenir Fanalenc its historical predecessor.
Club, school and academy
Local chess is not represented by a single entity. The municipal directory separately lists Club d’Escacs de Platja d’Aro, Escola d’Escacs Costa Brava and Associació esportiva d’escacs Anatoly Karpov; the academy announced in 2021 was intended to combine in-person and virtual teaching for students from both the club and the school.
The club’s own participant-facing activity remained visible in 2026. It organized an in-person event in the Girona territorial rapid circuit at Espai Escoles Velles, while its under-12 team finished second in the Girona development league.
An uncommon route to the top
The 2024 Lliga Catalana gave the club an unusual place in the competition’s history. Platja d’Aro became the second champion from Girona after Olot in 1977, and the federation identified those two as the only winners from outside the Barcelona territorial area.
A year later, Platja d’Aro won the top category of the Copa Catalana. It was the club’s first Copa and the first won by a Girona team, placing Girona in the competition’s top-category roll of honor for the first time.
The rise also reached the Spanish championship. Platja d’Aro finished runner-up in the Second Division in 2024 and earned promotion; in 2025 it placed sixth in the First Division and retained its status.
