Club de Ajedrez Magic Extremadura

A Mérida club combining an in-person school and a decorated team record with long-running cognitive and social chess programs.

A school at the starting point

Club de Ajedrez Magic Extremadura was founded in Mérida in 2001 to promote chess teaching and participation. Its in-person school became one of the organisation's training pillars under grandmaster Manuel Pérez Candelario.

The school continues to provide face-to-face instruction in the city.

One club, several competition names

The club won Spain's top team division in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2019. FEDA recorded the first two victories under C.A.

Linex-Magic, the third under C.A. Magic and the fourth under Magic Extremadura.

Those labels belong to different competition periods, while the club treats all four championships as one institutional history.

At the 2007 European Club Cup, the team entered as Linex Magic - Merida finished first after seven rounds. The result carried an organisation founded only six years earlier in Mérida to the top of Europe's leading club competition.

Chess exercises without a full game

The ECAM Method uses the board, pieces and selected basic moves to work on attention, memory, reasoning and other cognitive functions. Many exercises require no prior ability to play a game, so chess material becomes a training instrument rather than a competitive end in itself.

A program built to last

Ajedrez Saludable began working with older adults in 2008. In 2026 it remained part of SEPADCTIVOS, a regional program that places the workshops within a broader active-ageing network.

That continuity separates an enduring line of work from a series of isolated demonstrations.

Reintegration and adapted learning

By 2025, the institutional partnership behind Nuestro Ajedrez Reinserta had accumulated fifteen years in the Cáceres and Badajoz prisons. Its presence in both institutions makes it a continuing strand of the club's work rather than a one-off activity.

The relationship with Asociación Down Mérida tells a second story of adaptation. An initial traditional-chess pilot around 2015 did not fit especially well; the workshop returned with cognitive, spatial and memory exercises and became an established annual activity.
