A structure built from 2003
Club Deportivo Xadrez Ourense was founded in 2003 in a small space in Galerías Viacambre. The starting point was modest: two coaches, an initial group of 44 students, and one team in Segunda Autonómica.
The project did not emerge in isolation. Before co-founding it, Elías González had learned at Escola de Xadrez de Barrocás, moved through the Orfeón, and completed his development as a coach at Casa da Xuventude; the new club gathered part of that local experience into a structure of its own.
The province as a classroom
In 2016, the Deputación de Ourense made the club the entry point for chess in its new sports-school programme, initially offered in four municipalities. Two years later, Xadrez Ourense's coaching network reached 18 educational centres and five municipalities, linked to a training centre on Ramón Cabanillas.
The scale continued to grow, and by 2025 the club described grassroots schools spread across the province alongside weekly sessions at the shared centre. Its distinctive feature is not only geographic reach, but the bridge from local introduction to a common space for more advanced training.
A community across generations
Liga de Nadal reveals the club's internal life through a measure other than results. Its first edition brought together 44 participants in 2003; the nineteenth, held in 2022, placed players aged from 5 to 72 in the same event.
The school programme has also had a public face. In 2012, the sixth Copa Maristas Galicia, organized with the Maristas school in Ourense, brought together more than 300 young players from Galicia, elsewhere in Spain, and northern Portugal.
A local pathway to the national league
The first team reached Galicia's División de Honra in 2009 and made its Spanish Club Championship debut in 2015. Between 2018 and 2024 it completed six seasons across the national Primera División and División de Honor, turning that debut into a recurring presence in Spain's club tiers.
In 2024, its national team was described as predominantly locally based, although supplemented by international reinforcements. The 2026 Galician title confirms the competitive vitality of a model in which the school network, the training centre, and the first team operate as connected stages rather than separate compartments.
