Created to take chess across the city
Escola Xadrez Pontevedra was founded in December 2001 with an explicit purpose: to spread chess in Pontevedra. That origin remains visible in a program combining municipal schools with in-person beginner, improvement and advanced instruction.
Its work also moves beyond the classroom. PonteXadrez, Xadrez Na Rúa, the Torneo Internacional Cidade de Pontevedra and the Memorial Ramón Escudeiro Tilve are among its public-facing activities; in 2015, the first two brought chess into Plaza de España.
A 2017 edition added a travelling exhibition on chess and its connections with art, film, culture, poetry, music and education. The activity presented the game not only as competition but also as a subject of cultural outreach.
Learning before results
The youth pathway begins with an intentionally accessible competitive step. In the 2024 provincial promotion league, EXP entered eight teams and fifty players, most of whom were playing their first official competition.
The club describes play, friendship and learning as pillars of its method. In 2026, the competitive structure extended from the Fourth Division through División de Honra, while the first team finished runner-up in Galicia's top tier and the club's published record stood at five titles.
A partnership without surrendering independence
The relationship with the Universidade de Vigo expands that pathway without erasing the club's autonomy. The university describes EXP as an independent organization collaborating in federated chess, university teams, schools, activities and tournaments; in 2026, a campus representative described the partnership as a two-decade relationship.
A tournament with an international reach
The Torneo Internacional Cidade de Pontevedra is the partnership's most visible expression. Its fourteenth edition concluded in 2026 after nine rounds at the Pabellón Universitario; more than 250 players from 22 countries had registered before play began, and the final report called it a record edition.
A mission that reached Azraq
The outreach mission also acquired an international solidarity dimension. In 2016, Escola volunteers took 140 kilograms of chess teaching material to refugee camps in Jordan, and the 2017 Premios Cidade de Pontevedra later recognized that work alongside the organization's educational and social contributions, including chess schools established in Azraq.
