From sports section to independent club
Before independence, 64 Villalba operated as the chess section of Asociación Deportiva Collado Villalba. In May 2009 it took on its own structure and the name Club Ajedrez 64 Villalba, separating the chess identity from its multisport origin.
Two years later, the club won Spain's national club Second Division and earned promotion to the First Division. That result gave the newly independent organization an early national milestone, while its longer story also developed through teaching and community work.
A route from lessons to tournaments
The club offered in-person classes coordinated with Madrid Chess Academy, and in 2026 the two organizations co-hosted an Open. The tournament was played at 64 Villalba's premises, extending the collaboration from teaching into an in-person competition.
Ajedrez y TDAH
In 2012, the club launched Ajedrez y TDAH with the local health center and specialists in psychiatry. The program developed classes and exercises adapted for young people with ADHD, placing a club initiative within a collaboration between community chess and mental-health professionals.
The later pilot study included 44 participants aged 6 to 17 in an eleven-week program and reported improvement on two parent-completed scales. Its authors nevertheless urged caution and called for larger controlled studies before chess could be considered within multimodal treatment.
