Club de Ajedrez Pueblo Nuevo

Born from a chess section inside a baseball organization, the Madrid club built a neighborhood identity around a playing room, youth teaching and league competition.

From baseball to a neighborhood name

Pueblo Nuevo's history begins in 1972, when Club de Béisbol Distrito 17 created a chess section that entered the Castilian team league. The section became independent as Amigos del Ajedrez, ADA-75, in 1975 and adopted the name Club de Ajedrez Pueblo Nuevo in April 1977.

The new name placed the neighborhood and district at the center of the club's identity. That geographic reference endured through borrowed rooms, repeated moves and periods of severe instability.

Close to disappearing

After losing a room in 1989, the club spent several seasons relying on temporary solutions and was close to disappearing by the end of 1994-1995. A room provided by the parish of Iglesia de Fátima gave the remaining players a practical base from which to rebuild.

The room that made the school possible

Sundays could again be used for league matches, while Saturdays were set aside for children's lessons. The club's chess school began in the same space that made organized team play viable again.

A dedicated room and a public presence

At the start of the 2004-2005 season, Pueblo Nuevo opened its first dedicated rented premises and developed a more regular tournament program. Its in-person model combines casual play, teaching for adults and young players, federation events and Madrid team league competition.

The relationship with the neighborhood also extended beyond league play. Municipal records list open events in 2010, a face-to-face classes project in 2013 and a chess learning and outreach project in 2026.
