Teaching built into competition

The section operates at Oberena's facilities in the La Milagrosa area. Escuela de Ajedrez Oberena offers in-person group classes from beginner level to advanced preparation, and its students also enter official tournaments, social activities and regional competitions.

The XVII Torneo Escolar Oberena, held at the club in 2026, brought together children and families from different clubs. In the 2025 Juegos Deportivos de Navarra team competition, a field of 57 teams from ten clubs, Oberena won four of the six categories: under-8, under-10, under-16 and under-18.

The section also competes in the open team championship. Oberena A won the División de Honor of the 2023 Navarre Team Championship.

Javier Habans, an Oberena-linked player

Javier Habans, identified by the Navarre Chess Federation as an Oberena player in 2024, won that year's World Under-16 Championship in Florianópolis without losing a game. The title granted him the International Master title directly and made him the third Spanish player to become a world youth champion.

The title followed an already substantial youth record: Habans had placed fourth at the 2016 European Under-8 Championship and accumulated eleven Spanish titles across different age groups and formats. The Spanish Chess Federation and El País identified grandmaster Jesús de la Villa as his long-term coach.
