The national breakthrough

The first major national turning point came in 2007, when Sestao won the South First Division. Five years later, the series of Honor Division titles that defined its most successful competitive period began.

Sestao won the Honor Division in 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Federation records attach different sponsor names to those winning teams, but the continuing organization is Club Ajedrez Sestao - Sestao Xake Taldea.

A youth line beneath the first team

The club’s official history places school courses among its recurring forms of outreach. Its youth team’s 2025 Biscay title provides a recent example of that training line remaining active.

An open with international reach

The club's other defining public institution is its open tournament. The 2025 Open Basque Country was the event's 40th edition and brought 227 players from 32 countries to the Las Llanas fronton, with Club Ajedrez Sestao as organizer.

The open completes the club’s profile better than a trophy list alone. Las Llanas serves both as the historic base of a local organization and as the setting for an event that reached forty editions and drew players from 32 countries.
