A neighborhood name
Gros Xake Taldea was founded in early 1991 by chess enthusiasts living in Donostia's Gros neighborhood. Its first two initiatives already set the club's direction: the inaugural Open de Gros and chess lessons for local children.
Its changing premises chart the same growth. The club moved from a small room provided by the Gros residents' association to the Manteo sports center and, by 2016, to the Karmelo Balda fronton in Anoeta.
Teaching across Donostia
The chess school did not remain confined to the club room. Gros has taught at its own premises and in Donostia schools; Mary Ward, for example, named it as the provider of its extracurricular chess program in the 2020/21 school year.
From the first Open to the national stage
The tournament created alongside the club remained part of its public identity. By 2026, the official website presented the 36th Open Internacional de Gros, a visible continuation of the original neighborhood event.
The club's highest competitive landmark came in 2011, when Gros won Spain's Division de Honor club championship. A First Division victory in 2018 added another chapter to a record that carried a neighborhood project into the leading levels of Spanish team chess.
Civic and competitive recognition
Donostia / San Sebastián City Council awarded the club the Medalla al Mérito Ciudadano in 2009. Two years later came the national Division de Honor title, a sequence that captures the coexistence of citywide teaching and competitive ambition.
