From 1950s roots to the top division
Club Ajedrez Silla traces its roots to the 1950s. Elías Sebastián, a chess enthusiast from Mataró who spent summers in Silla, helped found it in 1962.
At its 50th anniversary in 2012, the club recalled that after several years without competing outside the town, it had returned to the interclub championship in 1984 and had played it continuously since then.
The club began competing in the Spanish team championships in 2007. Federation records then list Silla as Second Division champion in 2013, First Division champion in 2019 and División de Honor champion in 2020, taking it from the promotion tiers to the country's highest team category.
The first team did not carry that national presence alone. In 2026 Silla B won all seven matches in the northern Second Division group, took the title and earned promotion to the First Division for 2027.
Several ways into the game
In 2026 the club presented three routes into participation: EME Club Ajedrez Silla, chess for older adults and programs for people with disabilities. That year's calendar included a technical training session at the club and a disability chess workshop at Centro TOLA.
Integra't in the club and the park
In 2023 the third edition of Integra't amb el Club d'Escacs Silla added a chess activity at Centro Ocupacional TOLA. Its practical goal was to prepare participants to play with people without disabilities at Espai Jove and other youth centers, while also opening the club itself to them.
In the second phase in 2023, games moved to Parc de l'Alteró on Thursdays. Young people at risk of exclusion, TOLA participants, older people, children and anyone who wished to join could share the same public playing space.
An international event rooted in Silla
In 2026, the seventh Festival Internacional d'Escacs Ciutat de Silla brought together 250 chess players from 20 countries. The event gathered an international field in the municipality while keeping Silla's name and local setting central to its identity.
The program combined a main international tournament, an under-1800 IRT and a blitz event, all FIDE-rated. Their fifth, second and eighth editions respectively show that the festival brings together recurring formats for different ratings and time controls.
