A club before the headline event
Club d'Echecs d'Avoine was created on 10 August 1983. Its local activity combines regular play, beginner and improvement courses, individual events, and team competition.
Those activities give the organization a life distinct from its summer tournament. The international Open is its most visible event, but it rests on a club that also provides learning and regular participation.
From Loches to Avoine
The first Open de Touraine was organized in Loches in 1984, and the tournament moved to Avoine the following year. A club recap published in 2017 stated that the club had organized every edition after the Loches event up to that date.
The 2020 edition was cancelled during the health crisis, before the tournament returned in 2021 for its 35th edition. From 18 to 26 July 2026, the Open reached its 40th edition.
A tournament beyond the playing hall
In 2021, daily activities accompanied the games for players, their friends, and their families. The 2026 program included table tennis, badminton, blitz, and board games, while the Ville d'Avoine presents the parallel Festival Ludique as an event for children and adults.
A cultural dimension also appears through Échecs et Arts. Its tenth exhibition, associated with the 40th Open in 2026, displayed works in Avoine and Beaumont-en-Véron.
Schools as a year-round thread
In 2021, the club employee was delivering chess sessions throughout the year in schools across neighboring Touraine villages. A partnership described by Collège Henri Becquerel in 2018 went further, with a club educator, one hour per week built into the timetable of pupils in the first two years of lower secondary school, and two open-play sessions each week during the lunch break.
In 2026, École Joliot-Curie and Collège Henri Becquerel in Avoine qualified for their respective school academy finals, and the college team won the academy title. Those paths add a competitive dimension to the school work documented around the club.
