A local association reaches the top division
The association now registered as C'Chartres Echecs dates to 1983. The French Chess Federation lists it in Chartres and records in-person activity for children, beginners and adults.
Its competitive scale changed in early 2020, when the federation described the club as newly promoted to the top national division. C'Chartres Echecs then won its first French club championship at home in 2024, retained the title in Belfort in 2025 and completed a third consecutive championship in Chartres in 2026.
Championship chess comes home to Chartres
C'Chartres Echecs also takes part in Chartres's recurring role as a top-division host. When the city staged the championship for the fifth time in 2026, the club was the host and defended its title before a home audience, repeating the setting of its first victory in 2024.
School chess as a second foundation
The national profile runs alongside a teaching programme across Chartres Métropole. Club instructors work in schools, where lessons lead into school tournaments and an annual chess celebration.
The result is an organisation operating at several levels: a playing community for different ages and abilities, a school-chess partner and a team capable of winning the national championship. That combination, rather than the titles alone, gives C'Chartres Echecs its particular place in French chess.
