An interwar chess tradition
Dijon Échiquier des Ducs traces its history to 1929. In March 1930, a federal bulletin recorded a newly established Échiquier Dijonnais that met at the Cercle du Commerce.
That contemporary notice places the tradition claimed by the modern club within the urban chess-circle culture of the interwar years.
History returned to the board
The 90th anniversary was integrated into play rather than separated from it. In 2019, the 13th Open de Dijon at Château Stéphen Liégeard in Brochon included a retrospective of the club's history.
The same report described a children's school and adult learning, an emphasis still visible in the current chess school and annual internal tournament.
The Open as a continuing thread
The Open de Dijon is the club's most durable outward-facing event. Its 13th edition in 2019 drew players from three regions, and Dijon Échiquier des Ducs organized the 16th edition in 2025.
That recurrence gives the club a regional meeting point without detaching the tournament from its regular community.
