Club 608 d'Échecs de Paris

In Paris, Club 608 traces its name to a 1977 telephone circle and dates the start of face-to-face play at Gare du Nord to 1987.

The 608 at the other end of the line

The history preserved by the club dates its telephone-only circle to 1 September 1977. The number 608 came from the opening digits of the founder's personal phone number; opponents called one another, announced and repeated each move, and operated clocks at their respective ends of the line.

That first form did not continue without a break. The telephone circle ended in early 1986, with the club's account linking its collapse to suspected software assistance; a face-to-face phase began at Gare du Nord on 1 November 1987.

Building a club without a fixed home

Gare du Nord became both a setting and an organizing tool. In the club's account, a 1989 simultaneous exhibition brought more than 350 participants together against masters from Clichy; one of 608's defining memories therefore belongs to a Paris transit space rather than a members-only club room.

The club was not built around permanent possession of a single room. Its history records repeated moves, notably between Gare du Nord and Hôpital Saint-Louis; an independent federation record confirms that it organized its 78th rated open at Saint-Louis in 2005.

From social evenings to rated events

That organizing role remains visible in recent records. In 2026, the French Chess Federation listed Club 608 as organizer of its 19th rated rapid and of the Paris individual championship for players rated below 2200.

Alongside those formal competitions, the club maintains a more everyday rhythm through in-person casual play, classes from beginner to established club-player level, and a numbered series of rapid or blitz evenings, often presented as pizza nights. The combination of teaching, social chess and rated events explains its present identity more fully than the telephone-number anecdote alone.
