Asnières - Le Grand Échiquier

Established in Asnières in 2014 from a project rooted in the Yvelines, the club paired a rapid competitive rise with patient work in the city's schools.

A project carried from the Yvelines

The club's brochure dates the creation of Asnières-Le Grand Échiquier to 2014, but both the name and the underlying project are older. Le Grand Échiquier began in the Yvelines as the FFE's VIP club, intended to bring together chess-playing figures from politics, business and the arts.

After settling in Asnières, the club kept an activity base at Les Pyramides in Port-Marly. It was still organizing the French Blitz Internationals there in 2022, preserving a concrete Yvelines connection after its local identity had taken root in Asnières-sur-Seine.

A fast route to the top

In its first season in France's top club division in 2018-2019, Asnières finished national runner-up and won the Coupe de France. That immediate arrival among the title contenders gave the club a competitive profile far older than its Asnières foundation date might suggest.

Its first French team championship came in 2023 after a final-round draw with Bischwiller, decided by a tiebreak margin of one game victory. Another Coupe de France in 2025 extended the run to five consecutive trophies across the editions that were played.

Schools as the local anchor

The training structure combines a chess school, a pôle espoirs for developing young players and extracurricular instruction in city schools. It creates a route from first contact with the game to more focused development without treating every learner as part of the same program.

The Rencontres d'Asnières autour du jeu d'échecs show the family-facing side of that work. A second edition was already taking place in primary schools in 2019; in 2026 the event returned with the city education service and welcomed primary pupils, beginners and their parents.

Events designed as pathways

In 2025, a grandmaster tournament organized with the FFE and the Île-de-France league was designed to give French players opportunities to earn a grandmaster norm. The club used event organization not merely to display elite chess, but to create a concrete step in the development of ambitious players.

Later that year, Le Grand Échiquier staged the European Corporate Chess Championship in Asnières under European Chess Union patronage, drawing 54 teams from across the continent. From school encounters to international competition, event-building has become the thread connecting the club's different scales of activity.
