From quai de la Pie to the city schools
Club d'Echecs de Saint-Maur can be documented in 1976 at a community centre on quai de la Pie. For many years its purpose was straightforward: regulars came together for friendly games.
That neighbourhood origin predates the club's later development into a structured training and competition organization.
The shift began around 2004-2005, when Philippe Kalman started introducing children to chess and took the activity into schools across the city. The club's first young players qualified for the French championships in 2007.
Club d'Echecs de Saint-Maur now maintains in-person coaching and team competition for both young people and adults.
Kalman's method enabled activity leaders to teach the basics without first becoming chess players themselves. For children aged three to six, it also used songs and role-play built around the movement of the pieces.
In January 2016, Le Parisien reported workshops in every Saint-Maur school; the municipal children's team tournament, which reached its 13th edition in 2026, gave that school outreach a lasting shared occasion.
A pathway beyond one coach
Xavier Parmentier joined Saint-Maur in 2013 to coach the elite section. He brought unusual experience, having led France's youth national team for nineteen years and trained coaches for the French Chess Federation.
His arrival added a pathway for advanced players to the club's broad school outreach.
After his death in 2016, the coaching programme passed successively to Manuel Valles and Sylvain Degardin. By January 2025, Saint-Maur's youth team was contesting its second season in Top Jeunes, the top national division for youth teams.
That result gives a concrete measure of continuity beyond one coach or generation.
Hosting the Internationaux de France
In 2024, Saint-Maur hosted the Internationaux de France Rapide et Blitz in a format open to beginners and grandmasters alike. The federation highlighted the work of club volunteers, the city's logistical support and its promotion of chess in schools.
The event returned for a second consecutive year in 2025, when the federation's review emphasized the involvement of the whole club. Saint-Maur therefore emerges as an organizing community, not simply a venue supplied for the occasion.
