The La Bourdonnais name
The association Club d'Echecs Labourdonnais was created on 23 March 1977. Now based in Le Tampon, the club is named after Louis-Charles Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a player born in Réunion and counted among the leading players of his era.
In 2026, the FFE documented in-person chess activity in the municipality of Le Tampon.
Chess across a municipality
The club's public work takes place in several parts of the municipality. During the 2022 to 2023 school year, it provided an instructor to Aristide Briand school in a priority district, after which the municipality incorporated the project into the Cités éducatives programme.
In Plaine des Cafres, within Le Tampon, a 2024 event combined games in the media library, introductory sessions, and outdoor play. The municipal library portal also advertised a recurring club presence at the local media library and games library, showing that in 2024 this activity extended beyond a single day.
Chess and sign-language learning
In 2026, the club and Pont d’Yves school combined Class'Échecs with sign-language learning. A club instructor taught chess while a deaf instructor taught sign language.
A player developed on the island
In August 2025, Johan Fondrat, then registered with Club d'Echecs Labourdonnais, earned the FIDE Candidate Master title at eighteen. The regional league and Linfo.re described him as the first titled player whose entire chess education and registration took place in Réunion, offering a concrete example of locally built progression.
