A club history beginning in 1962
L'Échiquier Grenoblois was established in 1962, and Jean Peyrin joined soon afterwards. In 1973, he was part of the club team that defeated Strasbourg in the Coupe de France.
The Interclubs league did not yet exist, and the cup was then the leading French team title. Peyrin later served for nearly thirty years on the governing committee of the Fédération Française des Échecs.
A ladder for learners
The children's school is arranged as a progression from learning how the pieces move to preparation for regional and national competition. Adult teaching likewise ranges from introductory to advanced groups, keeping beginners and experienced learners within one club structure.
Training continues through several forms of face-to-face play: a rated classical tournament, rated blitz, friendly events, free play and team competition. The same club framework connects lessons, informal games and official competition.
Inclusion rooted in local partnerships
Beginning in 2023, the club deployed the FFE's Infinite program locally for autistic participants. It worked with À Fleur de Peau on a youth activity and held adult sessions at L'Atypik.
The city later reported that some participants had begun playing at the club and that some young people had entered competitions.
Chess beyond the club room
The club also backed a public chess-table proposal selected through Grenoble's participatory budget. By August 2026, six tables had been installed in Parc Bachelard and Square Belmont.
They give organized chess a concrete presence in two of the city's public green spaces.
