A Bastia club before the regional league
Corsica Chess Club was founded on 1 June 1988 by friends brought together by chess. Its first resources were emphatically local, including a private room made available to the group.
The Ligue Corse d'Échecs was founded in 1998 and developed school instruction across the island. The Bastia club therefore predates it by ten years but is not the same institution: the club receives participants for learning and play, while the league carries the regional program.
A staged route into the game
The club's public teaching model combines group classes for young people and adults with a chess school arranged by level. That structure gives beginners and developing players a shared route into more demanding play.
Marc'Andria Maurizzi's early story shows one precise point where school chess and club life met. Corse Net Infos identified Boris Brunel as a Corsica Chess Club member when he recalled noticing Maurizzi during a session at École de Toga and alerting the federation; Maurizzi went on to become world junior champion in 2023.
Competition at two scales
In July 2026, the club organized a seven-round summer open in Bastia that counted toward the international rating list. Young and experienced players shared the field with representatives of several clubs, turning the meeting of generations into a formal competition.
The second Corsica Chess Club Masters Tournament operated at a different level in Bastia in 2025. Manon Schippke earned her first woman grandmaster norm there, a qualifying result on the path to that international title.
