L'Échiquier Cappellois

In Cappelle-la-Grande, a year-round local club is also the organisation behind an international open whose history reaches back to the 1980s.

Born with the Palais des Arts

The story begins in 1980. A French Chess Federation feature says the club was created after the Palais des Arts was built, and that plans for an international tournament followed soon afterwards.

That tournament reached its twenty-fifth edition in 2009 and its forty-second in 2026, organised by L'Échiquier Cappellois. The municipality describes it as the flagship event of a club active in chess throughout the year.

A route from schools into club chess

The local programme exists beyond tournament week. In June 2026, the club documented face-to-face sessions, internal challenges, competitions and work in Cappelle-la-Grande's schools.

Municipal records from 2023 place this school work within a partnership among the town, L'Échiquier Cappellois and the national education system, intended to introduce chess from an early age. School sessions still documented by the club in 2026 extend that contact with children beyond Open week.

One hall, many levels

A 2009 federation profile captured a distinctive organising choice: grandmasters and unrated players shared the same hall and the same wooden sets. The arrangement made the range of playing strengths visible within a single competition.

The Palais des Arts has also hosted chess beyond the Open. In May 2026 it staged the French Rapid Club Championship; the federation described the organisers as experienced and thanked L'Échiquier Cappellois in its event notice.
