From Udine roots to Palmanova
Palmascacchi's roots are traced to the railway workers' recreation club in Udine. One account dates the new Palmanova organization to 2011 and another to 2012; the latter connects the move to the initiative of Giulia Guida and Davide Ciani.
By 2026, the club was still organizing face-to-face tournaments in Palmanova, and the Italian Chess Federation confirmed its school at levels 1 and 2. Its current identity is therefore that of a participant organization, not simply a historic name or administrative structure.
A school-to-club pathway
The account of the club's early years describes local schools as an immediate priority. The Municipality of Palmanova also records more than a decade of curriculum-time courses for primary and middle-school pupils.
The teaching outline published by the club sets out free courses during school hours and a three-stage middle-school sequence: basic work in the first year, deeper study in the second and an advanced course in the third. End-of-course tournaments then place competitive experience inside the school pathway.
In 2018, 59 of the 125 participants in the Open Città di Palmanova were under 16. Young players were therefore present within the same international event as adults rather than in a wholly separate program.
Piazza Grande and nearby borders
By 2015, the Grande Slam d'Estate was already in its fourth edition and offered eleven weekly evenings in Piazza Grande. The square hosted documented editions again in 2022 and 2023, while the 2024 series moved indoors to Via Marcello 10, showing a recurring tradition that can adapt its setting.
The third Open in 2014 already brought together Italian, Slovenian and Austrian players. In 2018, 33 of 125 entrants came from abroad and 20 from nearby Slovenia, while the archive retains Slovenian and German-language materials for the 2018 and 2019 editions.
Festival Città di Palmanova reached its fourteenth edition between December 2025 and January 2026.
