The date carried in the name
In 1903, a group of enthusiasts asked the Trieste authorities to authorize a chess circle based at the Caffè della stazione. The club's published history says approval arrived in 1904, the date that remains in the organization's name.
The name carries the 1904 date, while the present sports association, Società Scacchistica Triestina 1904, was constituted on 20 March 2006.
Trieste in Italian tournament history
The club places the international tournament played in Trieste in 1923 within its own historical narrative. The FSI identifies it as the first international tournament held in Italy, won by Paul Johner.
The organization's account also includes the 1954 Italian Championship, which was staged in Trieste. Vincenzo Nestler took the title only after a playoff against Cherubino Staldi three months later in Milan.
A city festival and chess across the border
The club dates the modern Trieste international festival to 1997 and remains its organizer. The event archive records a twenty-seventh edition in 2025, giving the club a recurring public stage in the city.
The Torneo del Carso operates on a different, cross-border scale. Begun with Slovenian clubs in 2006, it reached a twentieth edition in Sežana in 2026, organized with Šahovsko Društvo Piran and supported by regulations in four languages.
Learning beyond the major events
The club's ordinary work extends beyond its major events. Courses for adults and children sit alongside an analysis workshop for members, creating separate spaces for learning the game and discussing played positions.
