A history of reconstitutions
The Accademia's name links the present club to a Roman chess society constituted at Caffè dei Pastini in 1819. Its history also includes repeated dispersals and fresh starts, among them reconstitutions in 1878 and 1890.
Age and interruption are both essential parts of the story.
The contemporary organization sustains in-person activity in Rome and describes its work as competitive, educational and recreational. In February 2026 it staged an under-18 tournament at its premises that counted for FIDE rating and qualification to the Italian Youth Championship.
From clubroom to classroom
Founded in 2017, the chess school operates inside the association. Tutoring, individual tuition and in-person group courses form its core, while part of its work reaches young people in schools and universities.
The under-18 tournament provides a natural bridge from instruction to competition.
A library for the club's memory
The Crucioli-Catalini Library gives the clubroom a documentary dimension. Structured since at least the early 1970s, it holds hundreds of Italian and foreign chess monographs and periodicals.
Purchases and, especially, donations from members, players and their heirs have shaped the collection.
That interest in books also appears in the Accademia's public events. In May 2025 Adolivio Capece spoke there about chess in relation to the arts, science, literature, cinema and music, before presenting his book Imparo gli scacchi.
The combination of play, teaching and memory gives the present club its most distinctive character.
