Ostia Scacchi

Founded in 2013 with a youth-first mission, Ostia Scacchi has built a pathway on Rome's coast that connects schools, public space and national team competition.

Two chess histories in Ostia

A historical remembrance published by Uno Scacchista describes a Circolo Scacchi Ostia that lasted for about six years in the 1970s. It met first at the Club della Roma in Piazza Anco Marzio and later in the back room of a bar.

Today's Ostia Scacchi belongs to a different organizational history. It was founded in August 2013 by a group of instructors from Quattro Torri, with an initial focus on teaching chess to young people aged five to sixteen.

Teaching as the operating model

The club's stated pathway begins at age five and extends to competitive play, with instructors described by the Lazio regional committee as recognized by the FSI. Teaching is therefore not a side activity, but the principle around which newcomers enter the game.

Its school-facing work appeared almost immediately. In the federation programme for November 2013, Ostia Scacchi was listed as a co-organizer of the regional individual school championship; in 2015 it worked with the Lazio regional committee and Istituto Comprensivo Mar dei Caraibi on a regional round that brought together 51 teams and 285 players.

The square returns

In 2023 the Torneo Ostia Scacchi occupied Piazza Anco Marzio and drew 87 young players over six rounds. Daniele Vocaturo presented the prize to the Under 10 winner.

The square thus appears in two different eras of chess life in Ostia: first as the home of the 1970s circle, then as the public setting for a tournament run by the association founded in 2013. The place creates an urban echo between two distinct organizations.

Youth titles and Serie Master

The youth results provide one measure of this model. Ostia Scacchi won the Italian Under 12 and Under 16 team titles in 2016, added an Under 18 title in 2023, and won the Italian girls' Under 18 team championship in 2025.

In 2026 Ostia Scacchi Black Team competed in the final of the Italian Serie Master team championship. Participation in the Master division therefore coexists, within the same association, with a project originally built to introduce children and teenagers to chess.
