From a multisport section to an independent identity
The present organization's story begins in 2007 as the chess section of Polisportiva Popolare Roma 6 Villa Gordiani, a neighborhood multisport association. On 7 November 2009, three enthusiasts gave the project the name Scuola Popolare di Scacchi, although it still operated within the parent association.
An autonomous association was formed in 2016 without cutting ties to the organization where the project had started. The sequence separates the age of the section, the birth of its public identity and its later independence rather than compressing them into a single founding date.
Teaching through participation
In 2026, Scuola Popolare still operates as a face-to-face club. Free play, tournaments, teaching and a chess library sit within the same participant setting, while the federation's level 1 and level 2 school recognition, first granted in 2015, remains confirmed.
Its 2017 brochure described courses for children and adults, from beginners to rated players, as well as work in state schools. The same document emphasized popular pricing and free events, showing how the organization interpreted the word Popolare in practical terms at that stage.
A 2017-2018 project run with Municipio Roma V and CentocelleScacchi brought chess into five municipal preschools and two primary schools for seven months, reaching about 350 children. Three, four and five-year-olds began on a giant floor board before moving to tabletop sets, making movement and space part of learning the rules.
Roma Città Aperta
In 2016, the club created Roma Città Aperta, an international festival that extended its work beyond everyday club activity. The third edition drew 189 participants in 2018.
That edition was held in Pigneto, and the organizers linked its name to Roberto Rossellini's film Roma città aperta, which was filmed in the neighborhood. The cinematic reference gave the chess event a specific urban setting and memory rather than functioning as a detached cultural label.
