A city history with a real break
Società Scacchistica Torinese was founded on 3 November 1910 in a city that already had clubs, initiatives and tournaments. The club's own history treats the Second World War as a break, then follows its postwar moves to Via Galliari on 1 January 1974, the point it identifies as the beginning of its modern period.
A home built by members
In 1991-92, the SST had to leave Via Galliari after eighteen years. Thirty-five members advanced the money to buy new premises, while about thirty life and multiyear members helped fund the renovation; the move to Via Goito followed in September 1992.
The clubroom therefore carries a precise historical meaning. It was a collective answer to a practical crisis and remained the club's public point of reference in the decades that followed.
From the World Master to the Olympiad
The SST demonstrated its international organizing capacity with the 1982 World Master, an invitational that included reigning world champion Anatoly Karpov. Twenty years later, the club presented local authorities with a plan to use the venues and international attention created for the Winter Olympics as the basis of Turin's bid for the 2006 Chess Olympiad.
Support from the local administrations led to the promoting committee in August 2002. FIDE awarded the 37th Chess Olympiad to Turin on 10 November that year, and a 2004 organizing committee including local authorities, the federation and the SST prepared the event held from 20 May to 4 June 2006.
From the classroom to the city
The SST's school project began in 1982, linking first instruction with a pathway into competitive chess. In 2026, the club was still running junior courses in its own rooms and working with Turin's civic libraries on in-person play for adults and young people.
Education and public-space play show how a club with a strong home base also learned to work beyond it. The 2006 international project did not replace the local dimension; it grew from the same capacity to bring people, places and chess activity together.
