From Mediterraneo-INPS to the 1974 generation
Bari already had a chess life in early twentieth-century cafés, with Caffè Stoppani remembered as its main meeting place. The academy belongs to a later phase: a Puglian chess memoir traces it to a 1974 transition from the Mediterraneo-INPS chess section and links its adolescent group to the excitement after the 1972 Fischer-Spassky match.
Another firsthand account recalls entering the academy's rooms in summer 1976 and identifies Manlio Bozzo as its first president. The club marked its fiftieth anniversary in 2024, bringing that first generation back into view.
A home spread across the city
By 2014, the academy no longer had its former fixed home. Competitions moved between host institutions such as Società Angiulli and Barion Sporting Club, while some courses were held at CampusX.
In 2026, collective play had another host venue. Italian Chess Federation records listed academy players and a team, with Spazio Oplà 3 at Politecnico di Bari serving as that side's playing venue.
Teaching across the board
Teaching formed another strand of the academy's activity. In 2014, the club described first-level, second-level and advanced courses, as well as work in primary, middle and secondary schools; direct play with more experienced opponents was central to its instructional approach.
This model joins the functions of school and club: learners meet a community of analysis, games and team competition. The 2026 federation records keep the competitive side visible beside that teaching tradition.
A game with Ennio Morricone
In July 1977, Ennio Morricone played in the Trofeo Pellicciaro, an academy tournament in Bari. On 27 April 2019 at Teatro Petruzzelli, the composer was made an honorary member of the academy, renewing a connection that had begun over a chessboard more than forty years earlier.
