A 1973 circle in Cagliari
Circolo Scacchistico Cagliaritano dates its formal establishment to 2 June 1973 and identifies Piazza Martiri 9 as its first venue. Its initial board brought together figures from the city's university, artistic and cultural circles, placing the new association within a civic network broader than competition alone.
In 2025 and 2026 the circle remained active in the Cagliari metropolitan area, with in-person meetings and a team in the national championship. Its historic name therefore remains attached to face-to-face play and team activity.
Gianlazzaro Sanna's route
The circle's history remembers Gianlazzaro Sanna as attending from the age of thirteen. At the 1989 European Team Championship in Haifa he represented Italy on board five and scored 7 from 9, the best recorded result on that board.
Chess at the Stammtisch
In 2023 the Stammtisch beer hall in Piazza Galilei hosted the thirty-third edition of a tournament organized by its manager with the circle. L'Unione Sarda describes it as having run without interruption since 1990, a city tradition rooted in an everyday social setting.
Teaching and rehabilitation
The circle offers beginner and advanced courses open to everyone, together with access to playing rooms and its social life. Ordinary instruction is therefore linked to entry into a face-to-face chess community.
In 2025 the rehabilitation service of Cagliari's mental health department formalized the renewal of a protocol with the circle. The agreement integrates chess teaching into personalized psychiatric rehabilitation programs.
