A generation raised through the Kodokan school
The 11th Torneo Kodokan Città di Messina Porta della Sicilia gave an early view of the club's youth pipeline in 2014, when 13-year-old Messina player Andrea Iannello of Kodokan finished second overall. Two years later, MessinaSportiva described the side promoted to Serie A2 as a very young group that had started together about six years earlier in the lower divisions, with its talent developed in the Kodokan chess school.
A tournament that opens onto Messina
In 2023 the Sicilian Chess Committee described Kodokan's chess activity in Messina as more than two decades old. That year's Città di Messina Porta della Sicilia festival was the 15th edition, and the FSI calendar recorded the 17th edition in 2025.
The 2023 edition deliberately connected the tournament with the city around it. A municipal welcome program took participants to central monuments and to Strait-side communities such as Torre Faro and Ganzirri, turning the chess visit into an encounter with Messina itself.
Reaching the Master division
In 2025 Kodokan A won its Serie A1 group and earned promotion to the 2026 Master division. That year the Italian Chess Federation awarded the national club title to the winner of Master, so the promotion put Kodokan into the division where the championship was decided.
A new university audience
In 2026 Kodokan also reached University of Messina students through a course taught by two association members at ERSU Messina. The third session took place in person, and participants included students from Iran, Uzbekistan, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe.
