One identity in Palermo's chess landscape
Circolo Palermitano Scacchi was founded in 1974 by a group of enthusiasts that included Lorenzo Giordano, its first president. In 2022, local press described it as the oldest and longest-running chess association still active in Palermo, with successive generations of amateur and competitive players.
This is not the same organization as Palermo Scacchi, the name under which A.D.S. Centro Scacchi Palermo was being presented in 2022.
The Sicilian Chess Committee lists Circolo Palermitano Scacchi and Palermo Scacchi as separate clubs.
An anniversary rooted in the city
On 18 October 2024, the club marked fifty years in the Sala delle Carrozze at Villa Niscemi. The program included a conference on the history of chess in Palermo curated by Riccardo Gueci, turning the club anniversary into an occasion for civic memory.
Over the next two days, CPS held two rapid tournaments at its own venue, dedicated to Lorenzo Giordano and Enzo La Franca. Moving from the conference to play connected the historical account with people remembered by the club.
Learning through a club tournament culture
Teaching is offered to children and adults, from beginners to players who already hold competitive classifications, and extends into school projects. Its range of levels gives the club a pathway for both entry and improvement alongside competitive play.
The club archive records Carnival, Christmas, Halloween and summer tournaments held in its rooms during 2023 and 2024. The sequence shows that tournament play had a recurring place within club life, apart from federation championships.
National standing and a European appearance
In 2007, the team Il Massimo Palermo finished second in the Italian Team Championship; the federation's team record assigns it to Circolo Palermitano Scacchi. In 2015, the club was also one of the Italian teams at the European Club Cup in Skopje.
Circolo Palermitano Scacchi was still competing in Serie Master, the top division of the Italian team championship, in 2026. Appearing at that level almost twenty years after the 2007 runner-up finish places its competitive tradition across a long span of very different seasons.
