A namesake from the founding circle
The Circolo Scacchistico Veneziano was founded in Venice on 5 December 1920. A chess report published in 1921 described it as a new organization and identified Carlo Salvioli as its honorary president.
After Salvioli died in 1930, the circle adopted his name. The dedication was therefore not a distant retrospective tribute, but the remembrance of an institutional relationship present from the beginning.
Chess at the Caffè Agli Omnibus
From 1925 the circle was based on the second floor of the Caffè Agli Omnibus in Riva del Carbon, close to Rialto and the Teatro Goldoni. Games and conversation were embedded in the everyday life of central Venice, inside a café rather than a space reserved solely for sport.
One of the young members was Giuseppe Turcato, who later served as political commissar of the Brigata “Biancotto” during the Venetian Resistance. At the Omnibus he mixed with Mario Monticelli, Eugenio Szabados, Giuseppe Stalda and Ernesto Hellmann, connecting a chapter of local chess culture with the civic history of twentieth-century Venice.
Taking the centenary into public space
The centenary was marked from 4 to 13 June 2021 with nine days of activity at Riva dei Sette Martiri and the surrounding outdoor spaces. Open play, tournaments and a simultaneous exhibition sat alongside lessons, game analysis and activities for children.
The circle in contemporary play
The contemporary program brings together teaching, social play and competition through age and strength-based classes, club blitz, youth initiatives and federation teams. These activities offer routes for learning, informal play and organized competition without reducing the circle’s identity to a single event or team.
