A lineage beginning in Guui and Jongno
Lee Cheol-woo's retrospective places the formal beginning of regular Inner Chess meetings in June 2006. The first schedule used venues near Guui Station on Wednesdays and Jongno 5-ga Station on Fridays, followed in later years by moves through Jonggak, the Konkuk University area, Seolleung and the Posco Intersection area.
The gathering grew out of offline sessions arranged through the Chess Mania community on Daum Cafe. Lee later explained the new name as a combination of inner circle and chess, marking an identity that was no longer limited to its online predecessor.
Unrated games and a new opponent every round
An AsiaToday reporter visited the club near Konkuk University in December 2011 and found a weekly Tuesday gathering built around over-the-board play. The games did not count for rating, and players changed opponents after each round rather than settling into fixed pairs.
The room that day included an elementary-school student, university students, working adults, a French participant and someone new to chess. The organizer described a culture that put enjoyment ahead of fixation on results and offered beginners practical advice when needed.
A meeting sustained by its regulars
A 2012 account credits regular members with keeping the weekly session going when the organizer could not attend. Some also played instructional games with newcomers and shared advice, distributing the work of continuity across the group.
The Inner Chess name also moved beyond casual play into formal team competition. A team under that name appeared in Division 1 of the 12th K Chess League in 2014, showing that the identity was also used in organized competition.
Resuming play and adopting an academy base
When the gathering announced its return in May 2022, it imposed no eligibility requirement and explicitly welcomed beginners who knew the basic rules. It also distinguished the meetup from a formal class, describing ordinary play with brief advice available when useful.
By August 2026, the official account was advertising the regular meetup at the Inner Chess academy in Seocho-gu. The community had gained a dedicated educational base, but the public gathering retained a distinct name and function alongside the academy.
