An inter-university start in Sinchon
King's Gambit began weekly meetings in Sinchon in March 2022. Its early sessions used spaces near Yonsei-ro and classrooms at Yonsei University, but the intended community reached university and graduate students across Seoul rather than members of a single campus.
The first program included a five-session course for beginners. Learning the rules and basic play was treated as an entry point into the club, not as preparation that had to happen elsewhere.
Choosing a branch by geography, not affiliation
By 2023, recruitment was organized through Sinchon and Anam branches. Neither branch was assigned to a particular university, so students could choose the location that suited them regardless of where they studied.
Regular meetings offered a choice between free play and mentor-based learning, and applicants with no previous chess knowledge were explicitly welcomed. By August 2026, public club pages described a wider network spanning Seoul National University Entrance, Sinchon and Anam in Seoul, as well as Daejeon and Cheonan, with recurring in-person meetings.
From COEX to ten university teams
Only months after its launch, King's Gambit held the unrated Meta Sports tournament for university and graduate students at COEX in August 2022. It was an early move from an internal weekly gathering to an event that invited a broader student field.
The online university league qualifier that November featured King's Gambit teams named for ten universities, including Sogang, Yonsei and Korea University. Those labels should not be mistaken for ten permanent branches, but they show how one network turned campus identity into a shared competitive format.
When the club name entered FIDE records
FIDE's archive lists a 1st King's Gambit Tournament in South Korea in July 2023. A 2nd King's Gambit rated tournament followed in Seoul in September 2024, placing the same name repeatedly in the country's official rating record.
Official channels were still advertising weekly in-person meetings across multiple branches in 2026. What began as a Sinchon gathering had become a network linking local branches, beginner learning and inter-university competition without attaching its identity to one campus.
