Five clubs named for their neighborhoods
성북구 체스연맹 links several parts of the district through five clubs named for 돈암, 길음, 보문, 장위 and 정릉. The Seongbuk-gu Sports Council listing places them not only at the federation base but also in an art studio, another teaching space and a church study room.
Together they form a small neighborhood map of places where chess can be encountered in person.
Its official introduction places observation at the beginning of thought and describes chess as a way to become conscious of time. That framing presents instruction as work on thinking processes and time awareness, not only on moves and rules.
Boards for schools and child centers
In 2024, the federation delivered 500 chess sets and 200 manuals to Seongbuk-gu. The district announced plans to distribute them to 14 elementary schools and 23 community child centers, showing that the outreach was designed for child education settings beyond the federation's own membership.
Later that year, members of 송중동새마을문고, a community library group in Gangbuk-gu, visited 성북구 체스연맹 for an in-person class. The visit records the federation's space being used as a real classroom by a civic learning group from outside Seongbuk-gu.
From a phone screen to an over-the-board event
The first 성북구청장배 체스대회 in 2025 became an entry point into over-the-board chess for one online hobbyist. The participant described seeing a street banner, entering a first over-the-board tournament, playing in a group with children and adults, and later sharing informal games with an older player.
The account records different generations and levels of familiarity meeting around the same tournament.
A tournament widened by age and access
The second 성북구청장배 깐부체스대회 in 2026 was reported to include participants from age six to 78. During the opening ceremony, sign-language interpretation accompanied the athlete's oath delivered by a disabled player, and 성북구수어통역센터 separately recorded its communication support at the chess event.
The interpretation made accessibility part of the tournament's actual procedure.
A book talk and signing for parents ran alongside the games. The parallel program gave parents a place in the event's educational discussion as well as in the tournament hall.
