Two lines of activity take shape in Songpa
Songpa-gu Chess Federation began with an inaugural meeting in the district on August 29, 2024. Its public activity then expanded along two lines: open competition and in-person teaching.
Its outreach classes serve elementary-school pupils and the general public, while separate teaching is offered to adult residents and older people. The result is an entry point to chess for several generations rather than a program directed only at one age group.
An open championship at the science museum
Since 2025, the federation has presented the SPCF Chess Open Championship as a twice-yearly series. The May 2025 event at the National Gwacheon Science Museum ranged from kindergarten to adult divisions, and the third championship returned to the same venue in May 2026.
Kindergarten and primary-school sections sit alongside secondary-school and adult divisions within the same event. Paired with local teaching, the age-group tournament places beginner access and organized competition inside the same community structure.
STEAM as an educational language
The 2025 SPCF COC framed chess as a STEAM-based creative-education and problem-solving activity. Choosing a science museum as the venue aligned naturally with the federation’s emphasis on creative thinking and problem solving.
That language links the classroom and the tournament rather than treating them as separate projects. The federation meets newcomers through outreach teaching and gives public form to chess through its championship series.
