Four weeks before the shutdown
San Gabriel Valley Chess Club was founded in March 2020 and opened in Sierra Madre. After only four weeks, COVID-19 forced the site to close, and the club did not relaunch in person until October 2021 in Altadena.
A second loss in Altadena
Altadena Community Church had served as the club's home since the 2021 relaunch when the Eaton fire destroyed the church on January 7, 2025. The club reported that the fire also destroyed the homes of at least four members, extending the loss beyond the tournament room.
On January 17, the club announced a tournament at a new site beginning ten days later. The short interval showed how quickly the organization reassembled in-person play after losing its home.
Teaching the language of rated chess
The club's central activity is US Chess-rated tournament play, but its beginner pathway addresses the procedures that can make a first event unfamiliar. Players can get help joining US Chess, using a clock, recording moves in notation, and practicing before entering a rated field.
Most tournaments are described as five or six rounds spread across the same number of weeks, with one game in each weekly round. Children and adults compete together, while a separate casual area gives visitors a way to encounter the club without immediately entering the tournament.
One championship field
The first club championship in 2023 drew 53 players and established a perpetual champion's trophy. Rating-class awards, including an under-1000 category, placed recognition for developing players beside the overall title.
The 2025 championship reached 70 players in one open section, including three masters, six experts, and eight players rated above 1900. The shared field brought several levels into the same title race, while the class awards preserved distinct paths to recognition.
