A weekly club in the university orbit
The club's local story includes activity at Florida Atlantic University. In 2009, the university's student newspaper advertised Friday meetings in the Boca campus Student Union; in 2020, Jon Haskel told US Chess that Boca Raton Chess Club had met weekly for more than fifteen years.
The campus relationship also extended into competition. A 2016 profile of FAU's student-run chess club said its members competed in Boca Raton Chess Club tournaments, connecting a city club to the university's own player community.
Two tournament names across two decades
A 2003 Summer Solstice Open and an undated first annual Turkey Bowl appear in the club's historical results. In 2025, the Turkey Bowl reached its twenty-third edition; in 2026, the Summer Solstice Open reached its thirteenth.
Both recent editions used five-round Swiss formats, which keep players in the event rather than eliminating them, with FIDE-rated top sections. US Chess named Jon Haskel Organizer of the Year in 2019 and identified him the following year as the person running Boca Raton Chess Club.
A school-year ladder
The South Florida Grand Prix gives the club a different rhythm from a one-weekend open. Its 2025-2026 season was the sixteenth year of a five-tournament series hosted at Franklin Academy in Cooper City.
Students competed in grade-banded sections from K-1 through K-12, with both individual and team standings. Requiring participation in at least four events for year-end recognition made repeated play, rather than one isolated result, central to the series.
From first moves to state titles at the library
The club has also worked in civic settings at an introductory scale. In 2023, Boca Raton Public Library offered a free monthly class for ages eight to twelve led by a club instructor, and its Downtown Library hosted a family-oriented formal tournament registered through the club.
The library relationship also reached a specialized competitive audience. The 2024 Florida State Girls and Women's Chess Championship at Spanish River Library was presented in collaboration with Boca Raton Chess Club, the Florida Chess Association, and Palm Beach Chess, linking a local public space to a state title event.
