Several games under one roof
The Tuesday Weekly Chess Night, one of Indy Chess's defining programs, had completed its first year by April 2024. Its three-part format placed adult pickup games, a children's workshop and a US Chess-rated tournament alongside one another, giving social, instructional and competitive play distinct places in the same gathering.
That weekly structure is complemented by over-the-board leagues and regular tournaments. The combination keeps instruction and competition within one participant community, consistent with the organization's mission to build strategic thinking and community through accessible, inclusive chess in Greater Indianapolis.
School 27 and an interrupted legacy
In April 2023, Indy Chess began teaching at Center of Inquiry School 27, where the Masters of Disaster had played when the campus was IPS 27. Forty years earlier, three School 27 squads finished first, second and fourth at the 1983 National Elementary School Chess Championship.
That triumph did not become a districtwide chess system. Indianapolis Public Schools did not establish a broad program from the team's success, and the team disbanded after its players finished junior high; organized instruction at the same school now joins contemporary access work to a celebrated but interrupted Indianapolis tradition.
A district tournament takes root
The first Indianapolis Public Schools chess tournament in May 2023 brought together more than 75 students from eight schools. WRTV also reported that Indy Chess had supported school chess clubs and teachers throughout that year.
At the district's fourth annual championship, Indy Chess and Indianapolis Public Schools brought together more than 150 students from over a dozen schools. Four annual editions gave students from separate programs a recurring district meeting point for competition.
Access designed into the program
Indy Chess offers school partners two basic formats: instruction and play in an after-school club, or a weekly lunch or recess program. When a school provides space, the organization says it can supply the chess materials and instruction.
Two later initiatives organize that access goal for particular groups. Pawns to Queens launched in January 2025 as a free girls program built around an in-person workshop and casual-play gathering, while the 2025 Corporate Chess Challenge supported the continuation of six free programs at Indianapolis schools.
