Boylston Chess Club

A club carried across Greater Boston

For much of its later history, continuity depended on moving. The club relocated to the YWCA on Clarendon Street in 1989, then left for Davis Square in December 2003 when renovation of the YWCA building displaced it.

The Somerville chapter gave the club a more visible neighborhood role. Its chess-in-schools program sent qualified instructors into local after-school programs at no cost to the schools, linking the tournament club to communities outside its own rooms.

Davis Square was not the final stop. A 2014 move established a tournament room on Norris Street in Cambridge, and in 2022 the organization purchased and renovated a space in downtown Boston.

What a home of its own changed

The 2022 purchase changed the meaning of Boylston's latest move. Instead of borrowing rooms inside another institution, the club gained a renovated downtown space with a tournament room and a separate area where spectators can watch and socialize.

The layout supports a characteristic mix of ages and strengths. Children and adults share the same competitive environment, while regular events extend from beginner-level play through grandmaster competition.

A club title and a new generation

Boylston's broad competitive ladder has also produced milestones inside its own championship. In 2016, Carissa Yip won the closed event and became the club's youngest and first female champion, showing how a long-established local title could also mark the arrival of a new generation.
