Chess before the evening crowd
North Brooklyn Chess Club dates its start to 2021. Greenpointers traced its pandemic-era origin to Ponyboy in Greenpoint, where a few boards became a pre-party fixture and neighbors played before the bar's evening crowds.
The mixture of chess and nightlife was visible by July 2022, when Ponyboy advertised a North Brooklyn session followed by a late-night music collective. Chess was placed inside an existing social evening, not isolated as a formal tournament program.
A club carried from room to room
The club did not depend on one permanent clubhouse. Public listings place its recurring Greenpoint nights at Buttery Bar in 2024, Common Mollies in 2025, and McCarren Parkhouse in 2026.
Across those moves, the stable element was the North Brooklyn name and the repeated face-to-face gathering. The venues functioned as chapters in a neighborhood club's history rather than as the identity of the club itself.
An invitation shaped around access
The club's official profile welcomes players of every age and skill level. In 2025, the Brooklyn Eagle described North Brooklyn Chess as one of the city's few women-led clubs and reported a deliberate effort to make the room approachable for developing players, especially women.
That emphasis also appeared in competition. In March 2024, North Brooklyn organizers joined Astoria, ChessMeet, and NJChessmates to stage Queens United, a rapid event that brought 20 women and femmes to the club's usual Greenpoint venue.
A neighborhood team in the Olympiad
North Brooklyn Chess entered the network of newer New York neighborhood clubs through the NYC Chess Club Olympiad. Its team finished third among eight clubs at the inaugural 2023 edition and returned as one of nine listed teams in 2024.
The results matter chiefly because they connect two sides of the same organization. Players gathered through a casual bar-night format could also compete under a shared North Brooklyn identity against clubs from Brooklyn and Queens.
