A new name in a familiar room
In late 2023, the Oklahoma Chess Association described the present club as a new organization headquartered in the Kamp's 1910 building downtown. Months earlier, the same association had called Kamp's the longtime home of the Challengers chess club, placing the newer organization in a setting with an established over-the-board tradition.
By 2026, the club was still operating upstairs at that address. Its open-play model invited people of any age or level to arrive without advance registration, and casual games remained available when tournaments shared the room.
A map into tournament chess
The club's adult instruction separates an absolute-beginner course from a follow-up course on opening principles, tactics, and elementary endings. That sequence gives newcomers a route from learning legal moves to understanding recurring patterns in a complete game.
A separate first-tournament guide explains touch-move rules, notation, clocks, byes, pairings, and time controls. The club also states that it supplies sets and clocks at its tournaments, reducing a practical barrier for first-time entrants.
The Holiday Open changes cities
The Holiday Open began in Stillwater in 1991 and stayed there for 23 years. After five years under Tulsa Midtown Chess Club beginning in 2017, Oklahoma City Chess Club hosted the tournament's first Oklahoma City edition in 2023.
The 59-player field was the second largest in the event's 32-year history at that point. Its significance was not an isolated turnout figure, but a young club taking responsibility for a state tradition that had already moved between organizing communities.
