The Chadwick club before Vassar
The club traces its beginnings to Stanley Chadwick, who organized chess in Poughkeepsie during the 1930s. Chess Life documented the Poughkeepsie Chadwick Chess Club in 1947 in a team match against West Point, showing that the pre-Vassar organization was already playing beyond its home city.
The surviving chronology includes a long break. The club's own championship register says the original Chadwick organization went dormant for more than a decade and dates the current incarnation to the late 1970s.
How Vassar entered the name
Longtime member Craig Fisher supplied the clearest public account of the move to campus. In a 2016 profile, he recalled that Vassar historian Betty Daniels invited the club into Rockefeller Hall in the late 1960s and that the organization adopted the Vassar-Chadwick name in recognition.
The campus connection did not turn the organization into a student-only club. Vassar-Chadwick welcomes people beyond the college and beyond Dutchess County, and a 2016 report found members from Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, and Putnam counties across a broad range of ages and backgrounds.
A championship as local memory
Rated tournament play supplies the club's durable structure. Vassar-Chadwick runs United States Chess Federation-rated events, identifies the Dutchess County Chess Championship as a premier competition, and preserves a best-effort register of county champions from 1979 through 2025.
Formal competition sits beside a social and teaching layer. A 2016 profile described free lessons for younger players through college graduates, while a 2024 reporter observed members arriving before tournament play to catch up and discuss strategy.
Teaching, guests, and inherited ties
The college setting has also supported instruction. A 2016 profile documented titled-player visits and simultaneous exhibitions; in 2025 the club invited Grandmaster Irina Krush for a lecture and simul attended by Vassar students and people from the surrounding community.
That 2025 event was funded through a donation from the late Eric Horsboll and his family. Horsboll had been a longtime member and a four-time Dutchess County champion, joining instruction, elite chess, and remembrance in a single club gathering.
