A project spanning Carmelo and Nueva Palmira

The Uruguayan Chess Federation records its players under the name Ajedrez en la Cultura. In 2026, a local report announced the formation in Carmelo of Club Ajedrez en la Cultura - Unión del Plata; documented activity by the project also extends to Nueva Palmira.

In practice, the work is distributed across Carmelo and Nueva Palmira. Youth teams, school qualifiers and educational activities bring both towns into a single chess identity.

Casa de la Cultura as a training hub

By 2025, Ajedrez en la Cultura was already part of the program at Casa de la Cultura de Carmelo during Semana de Turismo. Colonia's Culture Directorate also presented an activity at the venue as the project's first gathering.

That cultural connection later reached the youth team: in 2026, some students from Carmelo's Schools No. 11 and No. 92 had trained in the Casa de la Cultura workshop. The workshop thus linked a local cultural venue with school participation and youth competition.

Schools as the training ground

In May 2026, the team sent to the National Youth Festival combined students from Carmelo and Nueva Palmira in the under-12 through under-18 categories. Its members came from technical schools, secondary schools and primary schools in both towns, spanning different ages and levels of education.

Training also included material and organizational support. The project helped run qualifiers at secondary schools in Nueva Palmira and Carmelo, then began delivering sets to Carmelo primary schools and announced motivational talks with backing from cultural institutions and the federation.

From youth events to federated play

The educational dimension did not remain separate from competition. An under-14 event uploaded by the federation in April 2026 listed ten Ajedrez en la Cultura players among eleven entrants, and the national Elo list in August again recorded multiple players under the club's name.

During 2026, school and cultural training coexisted with federated play. Taken together, the documented activities connect learning, youth gatherings and competitive representation.
