From a LIFA group to a club
The club's documented origin lies in a group of enthusiasts who gathered in Atlántida, Canelones Department, in the late 2000s and were hosted by Liga de Fomento de Atlántida. In December 2011, the group began presenting itself as Club de Ajedrez Atlántida.
LIFA's hospitality formed the bridge between the initial group and the organization that continued under its own name. That relationship became visible again in 2023, when the club archive announced an open tournament marking the league's 75th anniversary.
A workshop that changed venues
In 2016, the club organized an open tournament at Espacio Cultural Pablo Neruda with support from the cultural authority and the Municipality of Atlántida. In February 2021 it documented the return of free-entry workshops at the municipal cultural space.
A few months later, the club announced the workshop's return at Biblioteca Idea Vilariño in Villa Argentina, with free admission and access for the general public. The proposal preserved that free, open format in another host institution.
The town square and federation competition
In May 2022, the club brought a giant chess set to Plaza Varela, opposite the municipal building, for anyone who wished to play. The initiative carried the workshops' principle of open access into public space.
Community work existed alongside competition. In 2025, the federation recorded an event named Cuartos de Final Atlántida, and the Uruguayan Team Rapid Interclub Championship results for the same year included a team named ATLANTIDA.
