Club Social de Ajedrez Capra

A Barrio Capra project linking free instruction, federation competition and the use of public spaces in Montevideo.

An academy named for its neighborhood

Capra presents itself through an explicit territorial reference. In 2026, its official account described a free chess academy for all ages operating in Barrio Capra, while a 2025 A Todo o Nada campaign had described it as a free space for children, teenagers and adults.

The first standard-play league

From November to December 2025, Capra organized a standard-play league in Montevideo that was registered by FIDE. The event added longer games to a project that had previously presented itself mainly as a teaching space.

The Intercambiador Belloni as an open classroom

During March 2026, Capra joined the federation and Municipio F in supporting a free cycle of open classes for children at the Intercambiador Belloni. Choosing the junction of Avenida 8 de Octubre and Avenida José Belloni placed introductory chess in a space used for everyday movement.

The cycle ran every Monday that month. At its close, Municipio F recorded participation across different age groups and described the setting as accessible and open, broadening the audience beyond the children initially addressed.

Competition among the bookshelves

On 1 August 2026, the club organized a winter tournament at the Biblioteca José Batlle y Ordóñez in Piedras Blancas, with federation and municipal support. Four simultaneous sections divided the event across different ages and playing levels.

In 2026, the interchange served as an open classroom and the library as a tournament hall. That pairing gave the club a recognizable territorial form: free instruction in a place of daily transit and organized competition inside a cultural institution.
