Chess in the Artigas commemorations
Chaturanga first enters Sauce's public record through the local commemorations of José Gervasio Artigas. The workshop dates its first Artigas birthday tournament to 2005, and the Presidency's official 2006 program already listed an edition organized by Taller Chaturanga at Club Excursionista La Amistad.
The 2007 tournament was not limited to a single open section: it included adults and age groups from under 18 down to under 10. In 2011, Canelones's Bicentennial Agenda again listed the event under the workshop's name, showing that the tournament had acquired a recognizable place in the town's civic calendar.
The same thread reappears much later. Sauce's 2025 Artigas program included a championship organized by Chaturanga, and the 2026 cultural calendar announced another workshop event in the town.
Three boards in the town square
In 2011, three chess tables were installed in Sauce's town square. According to the workshop's account, the idea had been submitted by a Chaturanga representative together with the local culture commission and was later revived and implemented by the mayor's office.
The tables did not remain merely symbolic street furniture. In January 2012, Chaturanga documented a five-player round robin, with three workshop members and two visitors from Montevideo, as the start of a proposal for Sunday chess and mate in the square.
Between cultural activity and competition
Chaturanga's recent public record has two complementary sides. The municipality presents it as Taller Chaturanga in cultural programming, while the federation's August 2026 rating list groups several players under the Chaturanga name.
In public documentation, the workshop is linked to Club Excursionista La Amistad, Sauce's town square and an event announced at Casa de Artigas. The federation listing adds a competitive dimension to that presence in civic and cultural spaces.
