From a club minute to a national observance
Club Español de Montevideo was founded on 1 July 1878. On 27 May of the following year, a club minute recorded the approval of a chess tournament that is regarded as the earliest known event of its kind in Uruguay.
More than a century later, that date gained a public role. Law No. 20,268 designated 27 May as National Chess Day, connecting Uruguay's official chess calendar with the club's early record.
A South American junior championship in Montevideo
In February 2008, Club Español hosted the 4th South American Under-20 Championship, with open and women's competitions. The event gave its halls a regional role as the setting for a continental junior contest.
Chess returns to the club's halls
A 2024 report said that chess tournaments had returned to Club Español's halls. A later official post also announced the resumption of lessons for players at every level.
In June 2026, the first Club Español Rapid Open brought players back to the institution. The organizer's report presented it as the return of a tournament after a long absence.
