A Castillos beginning with a Rocha-wide horizon
Club Ajedrez Grupo Palmar announced itself publicly in May 2007 with the aim of building a chess club for the department of Rocha. It emerged in Castillos within Grupo Palmar, a community organization that brought together several activities.
From its earliest records, the club described its scope as departmental rather than confined to a single playing room. Its official blog referred to members from different towns, and in May 2007 Palmar members organized a student tournament at Liceo No. 1 in Chuy.
Schools and the public chessboard
Schools became a recurring setting in the club’s documented work. In 2011 an event at Liceo La Coronilla produced a player who represented Rocha at the National Youth Games, linking a school competition to departmental representation.
Palmar also placed chess in shared civic space. In 2013 it inaugurated a public chess table in Castillos’s Plaza Artigas during an Ajedrez para la convivencia initiative, and in 2016 the Ministry of Education and Culture recorded further local activities carried out with the club and Complejo Cultural 2 de Mayo.
A memorial and a federative identity in 2026
Competition documented in 2026 also carried a commemorative element. In June the Memorial Prof.
Carlos Pereyra tournament was played in Castillos, organized by the club as part of the city’s chess calendar.
That same year, the national FUA rating list recorded Palmar as a club identity with associated players. The memorial and the rating list show that in 2026 the name first presented in 2007 was still identifiable in Uruguay’s federated chess records.
