A club distributed among host spaces

Teaching did not remain concentrated in one room. In 2022, Brecha documented La Proa workshops in Malvín, Brazo Oriental, Sayago and Paso Carrasco.

Three years later, El País reported twenty-six volunteers and free workshops at five Montevideo sites: Buceo, Malvín, Brazo Oriental, Sayago and Cordón. The network changed between those two reports, while the model remained consistent: taking instructors and boards into institutions serving different neighborhoods.

The 2025 profile described teaching pairs who attended to both the technical and social dimensions of each group, combining work on the game with the task of sustaining participation among people with different experiences. La Proa could share a method and identity without requiring every learner to travel to one central venue, an approach consistent with its beginnings in borrowed public-facing space.

Turning youth instruction into a national event

In April 2024, La Proa and the Federación Uruguaya de Ajedrez jointly organized the Festival Nacional de la Juventud in Montevideo. The program covered open and girls' sections from under-8 through under-18, and the federation's annual report recorded 163 participants.

The festival translated experience with children and teenagers into the capacity to host a national gathering. La Proa was not only teaching small groups, but coordinating multiple ages and competitive paths within one event.

Team results provide another connection between learning and competition. At the 2022 Interclubs, La Proa placed third in the absolute division and won the under-2000 category.

The combination is more informative than either result alone: the club could challenge in the top section while also fielding a successful team below the rating threshold. Competitive activity therefore extended across more than one lineup and more than one playing level.

Lowering entry barriers and raising the competitive ceiling

La Proa also treated a visible imbalance as an organizational problem. In 2022, club representatives publicly addressed the low participation of women in Uruguayan chess.

The club used women-only tournaments as an entry point, asked players about the obstacles they encountered, and invited historic women champions to share their experience. Their stated goal was to change the conditions of entry and broaden women’s participation.

In July 2026, the second La Proa de Fiesta brought together ten players in a nine-round international tournament. Matheus Ribeiro and Luca Giovanni Petti each scored seven points, with published performance ratings of 2464 and 2462.

The organizer reported that both earned their first international master norm there. The event broadened La Proa's educational logic: alongside lowering the threshold for entry, it created a concrete opportunity in Uruguay for regional talent to pursue an international title.
