A timeline traced through anniversaries
In 2006, a club letter transcribed by the Departmental Board placed the beginning of official chess activity in the department in 1958. The same timeline appears in the club's 50th anniversary festival in 2008 and in the 68th anniversary open recorded by the federation in 2026.
The organization's departmental reach also appears in the places chosen for its activities. The 50th anniversary open was played in Maldonado city, while other documented initiatives were based in Punta del Este.
Roselli and Karpov at the Conrad
In 2005, Club Departamental de Ajedrez de Maldonado supported a Bernardo Roselli simultaneous exhibition against forty players at the Hotel Conrad. Anatoly Karpov attended, greeted local chess fans and made a few moves in the games, while Roselli conducted the exhibition.
Paseo San Fernando as a playing hall
Three years later, the 50th anniversary festival brought its open tournament to Paseo San Fernando in Maldonado. It drew 61 players over seven rounds and added a closed FIDE-rated event, jointly organized by Alekhine del Uruguay and Club Maldonado.
Punta del Este on the organizing map
That territorial outlook was already explicit in 2006, when the club sought departmental backing for a tournament in Punta del Este. Its proposal aimed for federation endorsement, FIDE rating and a place on an annual international circuit.
In 2022, Antonio Agrasot, identified as a member of Club de Ajedrez de Maldonado, directed and arbitrated Punta del Este's first university chess tournament at the Liga de Fomento. In 2023, Club de Ajedrez Maldonado and the federation organized the Uruguayan Amateur Championship at Sala Benito Stern, placing Punta del Este once again on the club's organizing map.
